The talks on Saturday and Sunday morning will be joined talks: Selected pairs of speakers will introduce and discuss a common medical problem and the biomedical research efforts to find a solution for it. Using this new concept of talks, we want to point out the importance of biomedical research at the interface between applied medicine and molecular research. The talks are designed to appeal to students of all semesters regardless of their background knowledge.
There will be four talks in total covering four major topics of biomedical research. They will take place at the Rudolf Virchow Center, Würzburg.
Saturday, 30.10.2010
9 – 10:30 am | Cardiovascular Diseases - Prof. Stefan Engelhardt (

On Saturday and Sunday afternoon there will be the unique possibility to actively become involved in on-going scientific research at different institutes affiliated with the University of Würzburg. More than 20 research groups from the Rudolf Virchow Center for Experimental Biomedicine (
Homepage), the Biocenter (
Homepage), the University Clinic (
Homepage), the Institute of Molecular Infection Biology (
Homepage), the Institute of Psychology (
Homepage), the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology (
Homepage) and the Institute of Physics (
Homepage) will offer a broad spectrum of research topics and will enable you to gain hands-on insights into their research fields.
The number of participants per workshop is limited to 8 – 15 students, therefore it is absolutely essential that you register in advance for the workshops of your interest. Everyone is invited to participate in max. 2 workshops, one on Saturday and one on Sunday.
The workshops will take place on Saturday, 30.10.2010 and Sunday, 31.10.2010 from 2 – 5 pm. We will organize transportation from the Rudolf Virchow Center to the different workshop locations and make sure that you will find your way around.
We will offer a program for the evenings as well.
We will start with a Pub Crawl through Würzburg on Friday, 29.10.2010.
On Saturday, 30.10.2010, 7 pm we will show the award-winning movie “Schläfer” (
Click for more!) by Benjamin Heisenberg in the awesome auditorium of the Rudolf Virchow Center – popcorn will be provided as well!
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion involving the director himself and scientists from very different career backgrounds including for example Prof. Martin Heisenberg, founder of neurogenetic research in Germany.
On Sunday, 31.10.2010, 7 pm we offer a very typical Frankonian treat: a wine-tasting at the famous Hofkeller (
Homepage) of the Residence (UNESCO World Heritage Site). The white wines of Frankonia are very popular and since Würzburg is surrounded by vineyards (
For more click here!), this is a perfect opportunity to combine creature comforts and cultural insights. We highly recommend this event!
For organizational purposes we ask you to register for the evening events as well, but there is no limitation on the number of participants!
On Monday, 1.11.2010 we will host the meeting of the student representatives of all study programs for Biomedicine/Molecular Medicine/Humanbiology in Germany, starting from 9 am. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible and encourage you to check
here for topics that should be discussed.
